which places are accesible?
which workplaces are pwd-friendly?
where to find information?
there are two main problems that the PWDs with limited mobility currently face.
accessibility routes are constantly changing, due to road closures for construction work or faulty lifts. this creates more inconveniences and frustrations for PWDs with limited mobility who are already facing difficulties in mobility.
in 2022 and 2023, 32.7% of PWDs were employed, 3.6% were without a job and actively looking for one, compared to the national total unemployment rate of 1.9%. this is caused by a lack of career guidance to find a job suiting their needs.
these two problems can be traced to an underlying issue about the lack of resources.
for instance, google results are lacking as there is not much relevant and updated information for our target group, for example, information regarding accessible traveling. from March 2024, barrier-free routes are shown on the OneMap app, however, concerns about the suggested route being unsafe have also surfaced.
addressing the lack of resources for PWDs with limited mobility is essential for building a truly inclusive and equitable society. everyone deserves the dignity of independence, opportunity and participation in society, regardless of physical ability. hence, we should ensure that fundamental rights like access to information for safe travel or meaningful employment are met in society. without proper support, PWDs with limited mobility may experience isolation, loss of confidence and deteriorating mental health. by ensuring that there are sufficient and relevant resources for them to navigate daily life with confidence, these individuals are able to contribute their skills, talents and perspectives, enriching the border society.
our team intends to approach the problem by offering a marketplace solution. we believe that only the PWDs themselves truly understand the challenges faced by their peers since they have lived through them. by providing a dedicated space for them to share their knowledge, we can leverage the power of the marketplace to build a comprehensive resource package for PWDs with limited mobility. to do this, we are building Bridge It, a peer-driven community where members can share first hand advice, resources and experiences.
